Finzelberg wins 2024 NutraIngredients Award for Sustainability Initiative of the Year

  • Prize honors Go Zero as a trailblazing sustainability initiative in the dietary supplement industry.
  • With its Go Zero initiative, Finzelberg is pursuing the strategic sustainability goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2025.
  • A team led by CEO Michael Braig accepted the award on May 15, 2024 in Geneva.

Finzelberg’s Go Zero initiative has been named the Sustainability Initiative of the Year in the 2024 NutraIngredients Awards, owned and organized by NutraIngredients.com, the key news source for the functional food & beverage and dietary supplement industries. A team led by CEO Michael Braig accepted the award at a ceremony in Geneva on May 15.

“This award is wonderful recognition of the commitment, creativity and team spirit that flourish at Finzelberg,” says Michael Braig, CEO of Finzelberg. “It is confirmation of our holistic approach to corporate sustainability and it honors the successes that we have already achieved. The prize is also additional incentive for us to continue to develop solutions for a sustainable future and for the benefit of our customers. We would like to thank the jury and everyone who has helped us along the way.”

Sustainability pioneers

With its Go Zero program, Finzelberg will achieve climate-neutrality in 2025. Since 2014, the company has systematically been reducing the amount of energy it consumes and the CO2e it emits with its energy management system certified according to DIN 50001. In 2023, Finzelberg was awarded certification from the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). The measures the company has implemented range from the replacement of old facilities, through insulation, heat recovery and exhaust purification, to the use of more energy-efficient technologies.

Since 2020, 100% of the electricity Finzelberg purchases has come from green energy, and in 2023 it generated 30% of its own electricity from renewable energy sources. It is currently constructing a biomass heating plant, which will provide 80% of the heating required for extract production and building heating from 2025 onward. The heating plant will be fueled with woodchips derived from regional windfall timber and forest management waste. This locally sourced renewable fuel will replace 40,000 MWh of natural gas each year, leading to savings of 9,000 tonnes of CO2e each year. All these measures and investments will enable Finzelberg to save more than 80% of its CO2e emissions in Scopes 1 and 2 compared to the base year of 2020. From 2025 the remaining emissions (e.g. in Scope 3) will be compensated for via credible CO2e compensation projects that comply with recognized standards.
